The Great Pondhawk Dragonfly is an interesting green dragonfly that is relatively uncommon. This is a tropical dragonfly that can be found mostly around the southern United States areas. In the central United States it can be found in the lower Rio Grande River area and they tend to migrate to Northern Oklahoma.

Great Pondhawk Dragonflies prefer tropical regions in the world. They enjoy still water so they have a good place to lay their eggs. Like all dragonflies they need still water to lay their eggs because when the babies are born they have a small air sac so they can climb up a weed to the surface

The Great Pondhawk (Erythemis vesiculosa) is a widespread species occurring from the southern U.S. south to Argentina. In the U.S. is is not usually abundant, but occurs from Florida westward into Texas and occasionally New Mexico. It has been recorded as far north as Missouri and Kansas. 

This species occurs in many locations across South America, the Greater and Lesser Antilles, Mesoamerica and United States of America. E. vesiculosa is an abundant and widespread species with a stable population. E. vesiculosa is a widespread and common species throughout its range and there is no indication of any population decline. It is assessed by IUCN Red List as Least Concern.
